Typically "Drive" (4th gear on most vehicles) is your OverDrive gear (OD). Some vehicles have 5 and 6 gears. It is designed to run in a lower RPM range at higher speeds to save gas. The higher your engine is revving, the more fuel it is demanding and thus worse gas mileage. Unless you are towing, struggling up a hill, or need to increase speed without flooring it, you should leave the car in "Drive" or "OverDrive".
Driving car expends gas depending more on the distance that you travel instead of the amount of time that you are driving. For example, you can leave a car running parked and drive nowhere but save a substantial amount of gas than if you drive it 120 miles.
that ain't no question

I go for wrangler. It has outstanding offroad ability. I also have my jeep patriot. I can say that jeep patriot is okay to use. Less expensive jeep offroad and you can save more fuel.

If it take you an hour to drive 80 miles and an hour to drive 50 miles, you will not necessarily save fuel. Fuel consumption is measured by miles per gallon, not time driving. You use less fuel driving 50 miles than 80 miles.
An over drive should enable you to save your fuel usage. It allows you to drive at the same speed, but using less revs, therefore you will use less fuel.
Driving 20 miles at:70 mph takes about 17 minutes 8 seconds55 mph takes about 21 minutes 49 seconds
Consider taking I-70 to save about 90 miles on the vehicle instead of driving through Albuquerque. The estimated driving time is almost the same.
