Yes, you can. But is it legal and is it safe to do so? Generally not. Many (most) cities of any size have city ordinances prohibiting skating in the street because it is extraordinarily dangerous - even for a skilled skater. Check with your local police department, or, if you live in an unincorporated area, your county sheriff's department. They will give you that information because it is their job to do so. Certainly officers of the law don't want you infringing on the law, but, believe it or not, they don't want to have to roll up on a scene where you are lying in a heap with your blood pooling around you. Many a cop has had to "pick up the pieced" after someone on a bike, skateboard or skates has had an encounter with a vehicle. And in situations like that, the vehicle never loses; the other person (you!) will. Think it through and make a good decision about what you will do.
