Actually, pretty much every religion was made up at some point. Given the vast number of religions, the majority of which exclude others from also being true, the chance of any particular religion not being made up is quite slim.
The trick is making your religion accepted and recognized. In some parts of the world, you'd likely be in violation of some pretty severe religious laws. In the Western world, you'd likely run into some bureaucratic red tape to wade through, but you can otherwise make up your new faith.
