Without it, we would breathe into the lungs anything that we tried to swallow. It would be very ugly.

food would go into your lungs. it could build up quickly, and you can suffocate and die.

So, do not think about it.

dont ever think about because if you notice the epigottis is the thing that helps you swallow

The epiglottis can become swollen because of either an infection or allergic reaction. The infection is usually bacterial and causes the epiglottis to become red, swollen and sometimes covered in pus. An allergic reaction (usually to food or medication) causes the epiglottis to become swollen with a watery or pale color.

You know, I have wondered this too... And apparently you can, but you have to got through therapy to learn a new way of swallowing so that you don't choke to death.
