There are cough products that utilize a cough suppressant and an expectorant together. You can, but the efficacy of using both together has been debated by the medical community. Cough suppressants such as dextromethorphan is meant to be used for dry coughs. Cough expectorants such as guaifenesin are used for wet coughs to help you expel all of the phlegm and mucus out. Taking them together means you can use for either type of cough, but it should be considered what type of cough you have if you wish to take them separately.
It's called Robitussin DM
Yes. Only IF you, or your dog(?) have time immediately afterward to have a nice long nap. Both allergy and cough medicine have the possibility of reinforcing each other with profound sleepiness. Call your drugstore with both products in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other. (The print is microscopic on both bottles)
My boyfriend took albuterol via nebulizer treatment after he'd taken some "Nyquil" (which had a cough suppressant and an antihistamine in it) and his body reacted fine except he coughed a little more. I think it kind of destroyed the action of the suppressant in some ways.
Plus, I think he was fighting a bacterial infection because today, he had a fever of 100 and so now he is at the doctor.
I think ideally, what you should be doing is the albuterol w/nebulizer 2-3 times a day during the day/waking hours and then at night, if you really can't sleep because of the coughing, then and only then take the cough suppressant.

For a cough caused by an allergy you take an over the counter cough syrup and an antihistamine. If this does not resolve the problem go to your doctor.
