No. Gold is not a magnetic substance.

Well ... I guess if the sample is attracted to a magnet, then you've discovered that the sample is definitely not gold. That proof oughta be worth something.

Can you use a magnet to tell if gold is fake?

A magnet will tell you if a metal is magnetic - Gold is NOT magnetic, so if a ring 'sticks' to a magnet it is NOT gold.

How can I tell if a ring is real gold?

You can tell if a ring is real gold or not by putting it near a magnet. If the ring is attracted to the magnet it is not real gold, real gold is not magnetic at all.

How do you use a magnet to tell if something is real gold?

You can't use a magnet to determine if something IS gold. However, if the specimen reacts to the magnet is is certainly NOT gold.

How magnet detect real gold?

Gold is non-ferrous and therefore is not attracted by a magnet. There are other metal that are attracted by a magnet but gold is not one of them. You can tell what is a ferrous metal and what is a non ferrous one but you cannot identify gold.

How can you use a magnet to tell if gold jewelry is real?

Yes because if the piece of jewelery were real, then the magnet will work and the piece of jewelery will be attached to the magnet. So yes.

How do you tell if jewelry is gold?

Look for markes of 10K, 14K, 18K on the inside of gold rings or on clasps of chains and bracelets. GoodOleTom checks for gold jewelry with a magnet. If items stick to the magnet then the probability of that piece being gold is very low.

What is the attraction of a magnet for another object?

Magnetism

How can a jeweler tell a ring is solid gold?

Jewelers will use a couple of techniques to find if an item is real gold. The most reliable is a scratch test, they rub the item on a special block that reveals if it is genuine. The easiest way to tell is to put a strong magnet over it. Real gold is not magnetic at all. If there are fillers present it will stick to the magnet, or you will feel it pull towards the magnet.

I just sold an item that is 14K solid gold and the buyer said it isn't because it sticks to a magnet. Can you test to see if something is real gold by using a magnet or is she trying to cheat me?

Pure gold is not magnetic. The less-than-pure 14K gold is often created by taking pure gold (24K) and alloying it with silver and copper to give it the hardness or lustre that the maker wants. But combinations of gold, silver and copper aren't magnetic. Testing gold with a magnet will tell if iron or other ferromagnetic material is alloyed with the gold, but if the magnet does not pick up the gold item being tested, we know nothing more about that gold. Some gold is alloyed with nickel, and nickel is magnetic. As we don't know what item was sold and because we can't know how the 14K gold was made, we can't tell much else from the question. A gold and nickel alloy will respond to a magnet. But what can be told from this? Only that the magnet is reacting to a ferromagnetic material. And that is all.

What does the word magnetism mean?
