Not really...for tile to be properly set it must be on a hard surface. A carpeted surface will not provide the hard surface needed for tile to properly bond.

Why Carpet Tile is Less Expensive than Carpet?

Carpet tile is becoming a trend that is all the rage in the purchase of new homes. There are many reasons that people are beginning to consider buying homes with carpet tile, rather than ordinary carpet. Carpet tile requires much less maintenance than regular carpet, which makes it overall less expensive than carpet. This article will discuss all of the reasons it is better to buy carpet tile than carpet. First off, one does not need to constantly vacuum carpet tile, as opposed to carpet. While one will still want to keep a vacuum cleaner on hand, one will not have to rack up high electric bills by constantly using a vacuum cleaner. In addition, one will save time by never having to clean carpet tile as much as carpet. There are even more ways that carpet tile actually saves a person money, rather than cost them extra money. One way that carpet tile saves money is because of the way it cools a home. Cool air is able to reflect from tile in a home and create an overall much more pleasant atmosphere. One does not need to pay hundreds of dollars in air conditioning fees when one has carpet tile in a home. In addition, carpet tile simply feels cool on one's feet. It is quite an economical decision to buy a home with carpet tile in hot states like Florida or California. In these sorts of states, it makes perfect sense to live in a home with carpet tile. Carpet tile helps to create a pleasant atmosphere in a home within warm states. In addition, one does not need to replace carpet tile, unlike carpet. Carpeting usually requires that a person replace it every few years. A person can end up spending hundreds of dollars to install new carpeting in a home. In addition, if something spills on carpet, it is usually very difficult to lift the stain from the carpet. In this sort of situation, a person will likely end up having to purchase new carpeting. On carpet tile, however, stains can be very easily lifted. Carpet tile is a much more economical way to go than carpet.

Tile is louder, but cleaner. I have taught with both. The carpet collects dust and debris which can trigger allergies.

If you have ceramic tile on cement do you have to remove tiles before you can lay carpet?

If the tiles are down tight and the added height wont bother you, it is fine to go over the tile with carpet glued down or over pad. The installers will hate setting the tackstrip, but it is part of the job.. you are good to go.

When tiling up against existing carpet is there something that goes in between them or does the tile just but up against the carpet?

Either way, there is a metal strip available that has a groove in one side for the tile and a lip that goes over the carpet. The most common brand name for these metal strips is Schluter.
