Yes and No.

The Air Force Academy does accept transfer students, in fact, many cadets do a year elsewhere before coming to the Academy.

The bottom line for transfers is that all graduates attend the Air Force Academy for 4 years. If you transfer, you will have to start as a freshman, or a Fourth Class Cadet, even if transferring from an AFROTC unit where you have already finished your time as a Fourth Class or maybe even Third Class AFROTC Cadet.

Your transcript would be accepted and some transfer of credits allowed by the new school. But you have to be released from the Academy.

Is the Air Force Academy a private college?

The Air Force Academy is not a private college because it is fully Federally owned and operated. However, it does not quite fit the description of a public college, as it is operated by the federal government instead of that of a state and its national selection allows it to be highly selective in admissions, even more so than many private colleges. It falls into a unique category, that of Federal Service Academies. The United States government operates all of the following as Federal Service Academies: The United States Air Force Academy, The United States Military Academy, The United States Naval Academy, The United States Coast Guard Academy, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
