No one really knows exactally why, they seem to change to black whenever they please, hot or cold night or day.

Are you using newspaper containing a blue dye? Dye is the only reason why a bearded dragon would turn blue. Now, they may turn darker just before a shed...but not blue.

Suffocation would just kill your Beardie. A Beardie turns black under the chin for the following reasons: 1. It's not hot enough and is trying to draw heat 2. It feels threatened by something and is trying to protect itself
Is sand good for a bearded dragon habitat or is it just optional?
NEVER use sand in your bearded dragon's tank Sand is the worst thing you can use, beardies are like human babies, everything goes into their mouths. When sand is ingested by your beardie it clumps in their stomachs and causes what we call impaction, which means they can't go to the bathroom. In turn this leads to internal bleeding and will kill your beardie.
