YES, PUMP IT OUT AND THEN USE A SHOP VAC OR A SUMP PUMP TO DRAIN THE NASTY STUFF ON THE BOTTOM. WE DID NOT OPEN OUR POOL FOR A SEASON AND DID NOT COVER IT FOR THE FIRST WINTER, BUT WE COVERED IT THIS WINTER. WE JUST OPENED IT UP AND USED THE ABOVE TECHNIQUE AND WE ARE UP AND RUNNING NOW. WE HAD TO USE A PRESSURE WASHER TO CLEAN SOME SPOTS BUT WITH ALOT OF HARD WORD AND IT IS OPENED.WE HAVE SOME STAINS BUT WE ARE HOPING THEY WILL LIGHTEN WITH THE SUN AND CHEMICALS OVER THE SUMMER.
Was told not to but we were at wits end, this past winter the pool didnt get covered and the pool was real nasty we tried expensive chemicals just a waste of money, today we drained the pool and then diluted Clorox bleach in a bucket cleaned the vinyl liner (looks like new)and now the pool is getting refilled as long as you have time and patience a shop vac and a sump pump you can do it..... good luck & happy swimming
It is not advised to drain your vinyl liner pool, or allow it to leak out below the level of the walls. The water in the pool holds the liner tightly against the walls and floor. If the water is removed, the liner must be reset with a vacuum to suck the liner into place while filling. Otherwise, large wrinkles may appear when filling a loose fitting liner. In addition, an empty liner pool may allow rain water to seep in under the walls, washing away and destroying the specifically contoured shape of the floor. There also exists the risk of a wall collapsing or caving in.

∙ 17y agoYes you can but you want to balance your chemicals Even Better! You don't have to drain the pool to patch it at all, unless it's a ghastly large hole. The local pool store should offer an "underwater" vinyl patch repair kit for about $10. The patch can be prepared and epoxy/adhesive applied above water and then placed on the hole UNDER the water! No need to empty and dry out the pool at all! I was able to do this when my brand new 12' x 3' Quick Set pool showed a leak as soon as it was filled!

∙ 15y agoYou can but be careful that there is not a great deal of ground water around the outside of the pool if you have one make sure the hydrostatic valve at the bottom of the pool will allow water from below the pool to enter the pool as it is supposed too. if there is a great deal of ground water the danger is that your pool will float out of the ground.

So I just erased his answer and giving you the right answer, it all depends if it's above ground or underground pool.. if above ground then yes just be careful and the water hose idea works but it is very very slow over days. .. but if you have an underground pool, them no, , the weight of ground and water table can push and buckle walls and in some cases pop the pool out of the ground. . I seen that happen 1 time. I use to work on poolsI've seen it all.. if you got any other questions feel free to ask

Is it possible to unfill a gunite pool that was filled in with dirt about 1-2 years ago when no damage was done to it?
I bought a house with an inground pool that was filled partially with demolition debris; bricks, cinderblocks, sheetrock tile, leaves. The owner wanted to bury it as well, he didn't fill it all the way, it looked like a black water pond. The gunite shells will last forever. All the other stuff may need replacement and you may need to re-plaster it. I live in the North East and found an old timer in the yellow pages that replaced my tile, coping an plastered for $5000.
