Adobe Air is an addon to Flash which give Flash (and Flex/other) developers a bigger target market than just Web Browsers.
For example, Tweetdeck is an application which takes advantage of Adobe Air.
If you really want to remove it, go to Add / Remove Programs, it is listed there and can be removed easily.
However, I highly doubt this is what caused your problems. As you have a fully legal copy of CS1, I would contact Adobe for support - that is why you paid the huge amount to begin with.
It should just be a matter of retyping the serial number and reactivating. If it does not work, then as I said, contact them or telephone them on the number that the software provides.

well most of the time adobe air is installed when you install other adobe products. from what ive heard, it's not really bad to uninstall it. some users have experienced not so good performance after uninstalling adobe air but uninstalled acrobat and had no problems. I'm guessing air is needed for adobe to run at it's best. so no, don't really need it but if you like things running at 100% i would keep it. i keep mines and it's only using like 35mb anyway so it's no big deal.

MS standard "Uninstall" will clear out the programme. However, a cleaner that wipes redundant registry files will also help

Adobe Air is Adobe's widget framework, much like those offered by Google, Yahoo and so on. It's perfectly safe to install, and can be uninstalled at any time from Add/Remove Programs.
There is only one Adobe Flashplayer. If you have multiple versions installed, you only need the latest one. You can safely uninstall the other ones.
Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel-Programs-Add/Remove Programs-Find ADobe Reader in list-Click on Remove. The program will uninstall.
