If by 'upgrade', you mean updated maps, then head off to your BMW dealer with a bunch of money to put down for the new DVD navigation disc. That simple. If you mean change it to the better iDrive type Nav, then not possible, I'm afraid.

If you are referring to the iDrive system (with the screen that is built right into the dash), then it is possible. But it is very expensive and time-consuming.
