There are two ways to interpret this question.

1. No you can not use a 12 VDC coil on a 12 VAC source.

2. Check the voltage rating on the automotive relay. If it is approved for AC use then the relay will handle the 42 amps that the halogen lighting will draw. If the relay is not rated for AC use don't use it as the contact surfaces are not rated to handle the current.

No, you cannot use a 50 amp automotive relay with a 12V DC coil to control 12V AC 500 watt halogen lighting. Automotive relays are designed to work with DC power, not AC power. Additionally, the amp rating of the relay refers to its capacity for DC load, not AC load. You should use a relay specifically designed for AC applications with the appropriate voltage and current ratings.

How do you wire a relay to control a 220V circuit with two hot wires?

You need a double pole relay, that is a relay with 4 connection places. [screws, etc.]. Place your 2 hot wires on the screws marked line, makes no difference which wire on which screw. The 2 wires being energized by the relay action go on the load screws of the relay. Square D makes a good quiet relay. Also make sure you buy a relay large enough to carry the load. The amperage on the device the relay is to control will determine the relay size. See View Discussion for more information.

Why does electric fan and light click when power is turned on?

I am going to guess that you are talking about a ceiling paddle fan with remote control (the remote being either hand-held or in the wall box) The click sound you are hearing is likely the click of the relay in the electronic control module inside the ceiling fan. This module contains the actual power relay that turns the power on and off. There is one relay for the fan and another for the light. When you press the on-off buttons on the remote, it sends a radio signal to the control module and activates the relay. You can't hear the radio signal but you hear the relay click.
