Eating stool is called "pica," and dogs do it when they are bored, malnourished, or dislike their regular dog food.
Before resorting to remedies the dog would have the ingest, I would try these things first:
1. Switch to a high-quality dog food that your dog seems to like better. Make sure the food doesn't include the word "byproducts" in the ingredients list and, ideally, doesn't include corn or wheat in the ingredients, either.
2. Make sure the dog isn't bored: the dog needs to get enough exercise that he is panting rapidly, at least twice a day. This means walks, back yard play time, fetching, etc.
3. Include "food puzzles" in the dog's daily routine, which help with boredom, e.g. use a Tricky Treat Ball or other food puzzle to give meals in.
4. Talk to your vet about pica and what else you can do to prevent it--but don't give anything like alum unless your vet SPECIFICALLY tells you to.
