The Catholic Church teaches that Christ is really present in the Eucharist. What place can fake flowers have on a table with the Real Presence? Living, natural flowers are appropriate, but are not required. Because the altar is used for the holy sacrifice of the mass, cut flowers best portray the sacrifice, because they, too, are dying. The soil in which living potted plants grow is no more appropriate on the white cloth-covered altar than on an operating room table! Purity is part of reverence. Candles are required and therefore essential. A common attempt to save money and meet the appearance of the requirement, if not the letter, is to use imitation candles that burn oil, not beeswax. Once purchased they are there forever. (at least it seems like forever!) I have seen a malfunctioning imitation candle tolerated next to the tabernacle for three years. A better use of limited funds is to purchase real candles, which are required, and do without flowers, which are merely a beautiful touch. Could the trend to disbelieve in the Real Presence be related to the trend to use fake flowers and fake candles on the altar?

A dedicated Catholic Church has an altar and both the altar and the Church itself have been solemnly consecrated with a lot of Sacred Chrism and incense by a Bishop. There will be a signed declaration somewhere that says that the Bishop has consecrated the Church and when.
