In a pinch, you can use car oil to get you home which I had to do once. Once you get home you need to change the oil to the proper type. Car oil is usually around

5w30 (the first number is the coldest you would run your engine and the last number is the hottest in celsius). A motorcycle engine is not liquid cooled so the engine runs much hotter meaning you need to use an oil that won't break down at higher temperatures, around a 20w50 oil. That's why it takes a little longer to warm up a bike than a car, the oil is much thicker and needs to get heated up before it runs smooth.

Can I run 20W50 Synthetic car oil in HD engine full time? Does this same oil interfere with clutch plates or are the clutch plates part of that oil system? Does the transmission oil cover the clutch plates?
