yup.. it is possible nowadays because of the stunning improvements in remote communication and location sensory devices. it is possible to track a mobile device even when the mobile is switched off.The only way to stop it is remove your battery or wrap the phone in a aluminium foil ...this is because of the latest invention of the signals created by the sub-atomic particles in the chipsets...it is recently developed by the FBI and MIT.They can even activate your phone as microphone ,hearing your conversations and this process is called as roving bug!
when the phone is stolen or lost ..the last used sim shows the imei number of the phone (even if you don't know the imei number....)
