If you have a tow truck that is not for hire and personal use do you need Illinois tow plates?
Yes you do. I have an '86 F-350 wrecker that I only use for personal use and still have to have tow truck plates on it. The way they made it sound, any second division vehicle designed to transport another vehicle must have tow truck plates. Rollback trucks CAN use regular flat weight plates, but only if the car sitting on them is licensed to YOU. If it's licensed to someone else or not licensed at all, you can get in big trouble. The only DMV that you can get tow truck plates at in IL is the main one in Springfield. You can go to a remitter's office (commercial license and title service) and they can do it for you. The stupid thing is, they do not issue temporary plates for tow trucks, so you can't USE the truck until you get your permanent plates. The remitter's office here in my town only took a week to get the plates in from Springfield, but I still had to wait that week before I could use the truck. If you go to Springfield, they can give you the plates the same day. The good thing is, the tow truck plates don't cost any more than flat weight truck plates.

Can a Honda Ridgeline tow a horse trailer?
Probably not. Some people use smaller vehicles to pull Brenderup's, a lightweight trailer, but it makes me nervous. I recomend a full-sized pickup that is equipted with a tow package. You need substantial weight to safely pull your horse and trailer. The tow package gives you extra braking power and a heavier, secured undercarriage for a bumper-pull trailer. Make sure you have an expert check your hitch to make sure it is strong enough to pull something as heavy as a horse and trailer.

No they do not. We use a small trailer with smallt ires behind our car and it does fine. It would be a good idea if you tow a lot of heavy things however.

While you might be able to get by towing a small, light trailer, that particular vehicle is not designed to tow anything substantial. If you need to tow on a regular basis, get an astrovan with a tow package or small pickup at the very minimum. Anytime you use a passenger car to tow you are putting the drivetrain at risk. They aren't really engineered for that.
