No you can do it , but the PS3 does not download while you are watching it. I was watching a DVD of a TV show I recorded on my media center PC and found that the Download does not continue while I am watching the DVD, but it also does not stop it from finishing the download after I finished the DVD.
The download in the background feature works if you are just looking for other items to purchase at the PlayStation Store.
