Yes it can. This almost happened to me. I had an unpaid credit card in New York City for 7 years. In the 7th year, the credit card company had filed court papers to sue me for the money I owed them. I did not show up to court & they won their lawsuit against me. I was ordered to pay $2900.00 which also included $ they spend on filing the suit against me. Then they called me at my job, & tried to get me to give fax them one of my paystubs. I refused. They can't force me to do this, I told them I would pay them in a few weeks and they had to wait for my payment. You do not have to give them any papers like paystubs, so please do not fall for this. I kept my word and paid them weeks after. But if i had been foolish enough to fax them a copy of my paystub, I would have screwed myself. They would have found a way to garnish my wages with that copy of my paystub.

Having a credit card balance of zero on a credit card is a good thing. It means one has no debts to the credit card company, which also means that no additional interests will be charged. If one either has not used a credit card or has paid all open debts and interests, they would have a credit card balance of zero.
It is still bad credit history.

A credit card is an open ended account. Colorada has set the statute of limitations at 3 years. That will be from the last communications from the debtor. Please note that the credit card may be based on a different jurisdiction which could be longer! Check your agreement for the applicable jurisdiction.
