Be aware that a lot of the more sophisticated virii now come as very convincing e-mails apparently from legitimate organisations - including your bank, a tax office or your ISP. Their sending address may even be that of the real thing - though the 'Properties' menu may reveal the truth. These are designed to steal information from you, usually to steal your money. The virus itself is generally activated by you selecting the inviting-looking link in the message.

There are often clues in them that they are not what they seem: unlikely names and titles in the signature block, peculiar linguistic mistakes, trade-marks in letter-headings not quite right. They may ask questions the genuine organisations would never ask in an e-mail - the organisation might not even use e-mails for the particular type of correspondence you receive. One dead give-away is that it purportedly comes from a company such as a bank, with whom you have no dealings at all anyway!

∙ 9y agoSimply put yes. Just opening email from an unknown source can potentially infect your computer, if you go to a link in an email or open a file from an unknown source chances are high that you've just infected your computer with a virus.
