Depends on the color you want to dye it to. In general, it is safe to color hair two shades lighter or two shades darker. Since it is already black, you can't go much darker. If you're coloring it two shades lighter like to dark brown or medium brown, by all means go ahead.
However if you're going much lighter to blonde or white colors, you'll have to bleach your hair. If you avoid bleaching, you'll be left with a dark tone on your light hair and it may look ugly. You might be left with a slight orange tone if you color without bleaching. For some people, applying the over and over again gradually removes this effect and takes them to the perfect color they are looking for.
You must also know about different types of dyes:
- Permanent - hair color is permanent, but it could damage your hair
- Demi-permanent - significantly less harmful, but works only for going to a darker color
- Semi-permanent - lasts a few weeks
- Deposit-only - only stains the hair and is least harmful. Lasts a couple of weeks
- Temporary - goes away after a single wash
You must choose the dye type correctly so you don't damage your hair especially when combining with bleaching.

∙ 14y agoYeah there is various shades of black hair shades, goes from deep blackish-brown to jet black to a bluish-black hair. So if your hair is not bluish-black, you can still dye it black.
