If it's #1 - live and learn, the till is your responsibility after all. Perhaps your boss can explain to you how this happened or you can learn on your own. If it's #2 - maybe you don't want to be a cashier. If you can't pay attention you can end up owing your boss more than you earn. If it's #3 - look for a new job and quit. Check the state laws and see if it's legal. If it isn't file a claim against him. The sort of rule you are talking about is a state regulation unless a business is under Federal regulation because it does business across state lines or by virtue of its size.
