Capitalism democracy and scientific materialism was the 20th century a century of progress?

As time has progressed we, the human race, have progressed more & more & the acceleration of that progress appears to have continued & be continuing. The fact that you can read this is, I think, demonstration of this fact. There were some factors of the history of the last century thast make it less than perfect, obviously, but does that make it different from what came before ? Time has always thrown up problems that humans have endured in one way or another, the difference is that in these times the knowledge & information is global & instantaneous, media coverage is available within a few moments from anywhere on earth. Capitalism is a fact of economic life, it affects us all whether we like it or not. Democracy is however a different subject: it is a theoretical concept. You might like to tell me you live in one & you have the vote & power is in your hands. Hah ! I tell you you are dreaming of what it might be like if it were true, Democracy doesn't exist ! And as for scientific materialism I guess, not much more than that, that the keyboard I am battering is an example of... go on, tell me what scientific materialism is, because I am not sure, in fact I am sure, I don't have the foggiest !
