Running low on fuel sometimes allows water, dirt or debris in the fuel tank to plug either the fuel line or the fuel filter. Often, one of the cheapest and easiest solutions is to replace the fuel filter. Even if it isn't the problem, it won't harm your engine, and may benefit it later.

Because the engine may need to be flushed because trash has gotten into the tail pipe.

There is probably something faulty with your fuel pump if it originally started but now isn't getting gas. OR you could be just out of gas.
