The reason to gear lock in park mode is so you're car wont roll back if your parked on a hill. If your e-brake cable snaps, the car will stop itself from rolling because its in a gear lock. Just make sure when you start you car to keep your foot down on the clutch until you but your car netruel.

How do you replace the ignition lock without the key?
Drill through the lock. There is a "gear" on the back of the lock. Try not to drill through it. After you drill through the lock you can use a screwdriver to turn that gear to the right position (RUN or ACC )depending on what kind of car you have. Is it possible you're pressing the green "no overdrive" knob when you put the car in gear? This will lock-out higher gear range. Just a thought.
