James II (1633 - 1701), attempting to promote Catholicism, was challenged by a group of protestant nobles who asked William of Orange for help; when William's army came to England, James escaped abroad. As this was seen as an act of abdication, the throne was offered jointly to his daughter Mary, and her Dutch protestant husband, William of Orange. They ruled together as Mary II and William III.
From the foundation of England up to Henry VIII, all monarchs of England were catholic. After Henry VIII only his daughter Mary was a catholic Queen all the rest have been Church of England protestants.
