Chandragupta Maurya was the founder of the Maurya Empire. He was also the first emperor to unify most of Greater India into one state. India thrived under his rule and that of his son and grandson. He voluntarily gave up the throne to his son and migrated south with the last Shrutakevali Bhadrabahu. His death was self inflicted through fasting, or starving himself, as according to Jain spiritual tradition.
