The chemical was known as Natron. It is a naturally occurring mixture of Sodium Carbonate with small quantities of salt and sodium suphate. These deposits are found in saline salt beds which arose in arid environments. It was used by the ancient Egyptians because of its capabilities of abrorbing water and it can inhibit the growth of bacteria
