If you have a code reader simply plug it into the ALDL port, then turn the ignition on.

The service engine light should light and it will flash the code. The first code should be a 12. The 12 will be shown as a single flash a pause then two quick flashes. That will repeat two more times. Then what ever codes are stored will also flash it the same format, each code will repeat two times. When it has flashed all of the codes then the 12 will repeat. If you get six 12's in a row that means there are no stored codes.

The 12 indicates that the computer appears to be working properly.

The ALDL port is on the bottom of the dash just to the left of the steering column.

You don't have a code reader? No problem. Just use a short length of wire as a jumper cable and connect the two top terminals on the upper right side of the ALDL port and proceed as above.

After that refer to either the factory service manual or a Chilton or Haynes manual to get an idea of what the codes mean and what may cause the code to post.

OR you have a scanner. Same thing, plug the scanner into the ALDL port. It will then read the codes in digits and better scanners will give you an idea of what the code is about without further ado.
