President Nixon nominated Warren Burger to succeed Chief Justice Earl Warren, who retired at the end of the 1968-1969 Supreme Court Term. Nixon's predecessor, President Lyndon Johnson, originally nominated Associate Justice Abe Fortas to fill the vacancy, but encountered so much resistance in the Senate that the nomination was withdrawn. Fortas later resigned due to a conflict of interest.

Chief Justice Burger presided over the Court from 1969-1986, when he retired and was succeeded by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist.

Nixon appointed four Supreme Court justices: Warren Burger, Harry Blackmun, Lewis Powell, and William Rehnquist.

Nixon's first appointment was in 1969, when Chief Justice Earl Warren retired. Nixon appointed Warren Burger to the court to serve as Chief Justice. Burger served on the court from 1969-1986.

In 1970, Nixon appointed Harry Blackmun to the court, and Blackmun served from 1970-1994. Blackmun replaced Abe Fortas on the court, and is best known as the author of the controversial Roe v. Wade decision.

Lewis Powell and William Rehnquist were nominated by Nixon to the court on the same day. Powell replaced Hugo Black, and served from 1972-1987. Rehnquist replaced John Harlan II, and served from 1972-2005, including serving as the Chief Justice from 1986-2005.
