Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of a relatively unimportant battle between Mexico and France (its only real importance is that no one expected the Mexican Army to win, and the fact that they did so delayed France's ultimate victory). It's not a big deal even in most of Mexico (where the battle was fought). I've been told by Mexican friends that it's actually a bigger deal in the US (where most people seem to think it's Mexican Independence Day, which is really September 16) than it is in Mexico.
