The climate was generally warm in ancient Egypt so the clothing worn was lightweight and usally made from linen. Silk was rare and only worn by the very rich. The men wore short skirts around their waists called kilts, while the women wore straight fitting dresses with straps on their shoulders. Men of high status wore pleated kilts, with the older men wearing it in a longer style. Wigs and jewellery were worn by both men and women who could afford it.

When doing hard work, ordinary men wore a loin cloth, and women wore a short skirt. Slaves working in the fields, building the monuments or working in the mines went naked.
