In the past there was communication devices that we now do not have. In the past there were such things as smoke signals, telegraphs, carrier pigeons, animal sounds and early telephones. plus letters. In the present we have cell phones, telephones, email addresses, fax machines, and more. so that's the differences of the communication system in the past and today the presents of the 21st centuries.
Communications now are done on the internet, television, radio, cell phones, hard wire phones, and satellite communications. In earlier times none of today's communication technology existed. The telephone and wireless, and telegraph were part of the 19th century. Before that messengers and post office mail were the best ways.
Also newspapers were used in the past and are still a major vehicle of communications.

The present continuous tense is used to describe an action that is happening now or around the current moment. For example: "I am eating breakfast." The past continuous tense is used to describe an action that was ongoing in the past, often when another action interrupted it. For example: "I was eating breakfast when the phone rang."
