Conerning the second coming what does Jesus say about the status of people that are alive at the time he comes?

The status of the people on earth when Jesus returns will be that they will be on the verge of dying if He doesn't return.

"And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened." (Matt.24:22)

With a series of prophesied "heavenly signs" (see Rev.6, seal six; and Matt.24:29) He will cause man's genocidal activities to cease... and gather those who are obedient to Him with Him in the clouds as He approaches earth as the nations look on with dread (Matt.24:30-31)...

and pour out His last seven vials of wrath on those who are gathered at Armageddon to fight Him (Rev.16)...

just before He finishes His descent upon the Mount of Olives with His angelic army to make war against the nations and establish His Kingdom for a thousand years (Zech.14).

When the last Trumpet is sounded and Jesus descends upon the earth... the nations will be angry, rebellious and unwilling to give up their rule of the earth to Him.

"...the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever... We give thanks, O Lord God Almighty... because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth." (Rev.11:15-18)

The status of the people on earth is one of fear and dread as all of man's cities will become abandoned ghost towns with men scattered into the mountains, hills and forests (whatever forests might remain).

"...until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted and the fields ruined and ravaged, until the Lord has sent everyone far away and the land is utterly forsaken..." (Isa.6:11-12 NIV).

"...men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken..." (Luke 21:26).

The world and most of its inhabitants will not be happy campers when Jesus returns. Only His "elect" will have faith enough to expect Him and to be looking for Him.

"When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." (Luke 21:28 NIV)

"...He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him." (Heb.9:29 NIV)
