How can you tell if the timing chain on a 1998 Dodge Avenger needs replacement?

Most timing belts from manufacturers should last 100k miles but recommend you change it at around 70k miles, most timing covers have an access panel where you can see the timing belt if you see any cracks and or is extremely dry or wet by oil or any engine fluids you should change it as soon as possible, before it breaks and it will cost you a lot more money to fix.

What is the average cost to replace the timing belt on a 1998 millenia s?

Depends on where you take it. (Part of the country) In Metro Atlanta, 900 bucks In Chattanooga TN, 650 Now in doing this spend the extra 200 for the rest of the belts since the labor is all together in the ONE job. When you go back and do your other belts, you have to pay labour all over again. (Recommend you take it to the dealer ESPECIALLY for these S types. There is retuning an timing adjustments that require the experts)
