No you don't have to pull the engine in order to replace the timing belt but let me suggest you buy the parts and take it to a good mechanic and let them do it. Changing the timing belt is difficult and it may cost you an extra hundred or so for someone else to change but its worth not having the headache. amen...i did it to my mom's 96 stratus ES (V6)...will never do it again...unless i get paid at least $500!!!
Separate issue, if you need too set the timing following a timing belt change or belt slippage then you have to set the mechnical timing of the motor. Go buy a Chilton or Haynes manual which will tell you where the marks are and you can properly set the timing before starting the motor.
Buy the Hayne's manual. It's only few bucks and will save well beyond its cost in confusion and aggrivation.
Replacing the timing belt on a Ford Contour involves removing the right motor mount, removing the serpentine belt, crankshaft pulley, and idler pulleys, removing the upper and lower timing belt covers and loosing the timing belt tensioner. It would be wise to replace the tensioner. The whole kit is about $160. You have to buy a timing tool to properly do the job. Cost about $45. Upon installation the camshafts need to be aligned with the crankshaft using the top dead center timing mark on the crankshaft pulley and slots in the crank shafts. That's where the timing tools come in. The kit has step by step instructions. Total parts will run about $200, but a mechanic is gonna charge $5-600 so it's worth it.
