Either your remote wire from you head unit to your amp is broken or not connected properly, you don't have a remote wire, or your head unit is faulty. Try another piece of cable as your remote wire from your head unit, and if it still does not work, your head unit is faulty. To save buying a new HU, you could wire the remote wire to your accessories, but be cautious as you could flatten your battery quickly if wiring incorrectly.

It really depends on who makes the head unit. I had a tape player and put in an Alpine CD player and all of my lights on the head unit work, but the wiring was tricky. I had to cut out a hole for the wiring to get from the trunk inside the car. Then I had to put the wiring under the carpet and under the backseat to my custom-built speaker box. Generally, you can't take the deck off of a tape player and put on a CD player deck and have it work at all. I would suggest that you buy a complete head unit. If you just want a new tape player deck as long as they are made by the same company then they should work.
