Pick up trucks and SUvs sometimes come equipped with retractable side mirrors. These are mirriors that allow the driver to extend the mirrors outward from the body of the vehicle in order to allow them to see around wide trailers they may be towing. The mirrors can be extended and retracted electrically or manually. The mirrors are made retractabe so the vehicle will retain it's narrower profile when not towing wide trailers.
Side view mirrors, or known as wing mirrors, are used to help the driver see the traffic behind their vehicle, in the blind spot. They are normally placed on the exterior of cars.
