Yes, Potato blight is endemic in Ireland and Europe, but today a variety of types of potato are grown some of which are blight resistant and we also have chemical sprays that can kill the fungus.

The trouble with the blight in the past was that there were no sprays and only one variety of potato was grown and when a blight evolved to attack this variety, it meant that ALL the Irish crop was hit and this lead to famine.

What did Ireland eat back then?

"Back then" could refer to any time. If you are referring to the famine times in the second half of the 1840s, the potato was the main element of the diet and its destruction by blight caused the famine. Poor people would not have been able to get much meat or other more nutritious foods and relied on the potato. In modern day Ireland, a wide range of foods are available with Irish cuisine and foods from many other countries all available.

Between 1846 and 1855 the population of Ireland decreased by a third including approximately 15. million Irish immigrants who left for the US. what was the primary reason for this migration?

The Irish Famine was the reason. Back then Ireland depended on the potato for food and then all of them got diseased with blight which made them deadly to eat. As well as 1.5 million emigrating around the same amount of people died of starvation.

Where did the Irish flee to during the early 1800s?

They left because of the potatoe famine, in which a blight caused potatoes to be inedible , and considering Ireland was so poor back then and the potato was the staple diet, people thought that they'd have a better life in the us. They left Ireland because of the "opportunities" united sates, because they believed that they would live alot better there.

Did Irish immigrants go back to Ireland after a cure was found for the potato disease?

Eventually some went back but mostly they stayed where they moved to and spread.

Why do people call Ireland the potato country when they just buy them off of South America?

Although the potato is indigenous to south America during the European colonisation of the Americas they brought back the potato. In many countries where people were poor and couldn't afford to eat anything much else they used to grow potato's. The Irish were mostly poor at the time and subsisted chiefly on a diet of potato's, much more so than the native south Americans. This dependence on the potato was generally due to English colonisation of Ireland and using much of the arable land to produce beef for the export market to England. While this gave a larger workforce in Ireland they also were dependant on the potato as a staple, in contrast to the earlier slightly wealthier farmers for which the potato was a supplement. The fact that this was the staple crop of the poor led to the famine due to blight that was spread from the united states on transatlantic trade routes. Of the million people that left Ireland during that time many of them would have subsisted on potato's before, and naturally I guess would have asked for them in the countries that they went to, garnering the Irish association with the starchy tuber. Oh, and we don't buy them from South America, we grow them.

Which potato did not come from Ireland?

Potatoes were brought back to Ireland and the rest of Europe from the "New World", South America, upon their discovery by European explorers. Potatoes were not found anywhere in Europe, Asia or Africa until they were imported. Ireland became dependent on potatoes after their importation to Europe largely because it was a poor country and potatoes grow quickly and easily in many different climates.

When did the Irish potato famine start and end?

from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Famine_(Ireland) The Great Famine (Irish: An Gorta Mór lit: The Great Hunger[1] or An Drochshaol, lit: The Bad Life) was a period of starvation, disease and mass emigration between 1845 and 1852[2] during which the population of Ireland was reduced by 20 to 25 percent.[3] Approximately one million of the population died and a million more emigrated from Ireland's shores.[4] The proximate cause of famine was a potato disease commonly known as late blight.[5]In the 1840's

What country did the potato come from originally?

Ireland. +++ No. It was a South American plant brought back by early European explorers- though I am not sure which part of the continent.

Where did the Irish patato come from?

Potatoes were brought back from the English colonization of northern America The potato was first cultivated by northern American Indians and was brought back by Sir Walter Raleigh (with tobacco amongst other things). The queen had previously given Sir Raleigh an estate during the plantations in Ireland previously (where Anglo Irish lords were dispossessed of their land and titles and people loyal to the English crown were "planted" in their place). After his return from the new world Raleigh retired to his estate in Ireland and I can only assume brought the potato, since its a starchy tuber it was perfect for the peasants that worked the land, that way they could fill themselves up since usually they had little food.
