Asperger Syndrome kids are more likely to be harmed by their classmates than to cause them any harm, since most AS kids make very attractive targets for bullying.

Bullied kids, on rare occasions, may retaliate against their classmates. Also, Asperger Syndrome makes a kid more prone to getting overwhelmed or panicking in reaction to certain situations (eg change in routine) and this can cause a tantrum, which may include aggressive behavior (this is usually not severe, however).

However, Asperger Syndrome kids are not generally a high risk to their classmates. They are not malicious, just easily overwhelmed and likely to be victimized.

If a child with Asperger Syndrome is malicious, that probably signals that they have another condition as well, such as conduct disorder. This is not associated with Asperger Syndrome, but mere chance can result in a kid having both conditions.

How do you tell a parent that you think their child has Asperger's syndrome?

My mother-in-law showed my wife an article on Aspergers Syndrome. That's how we figured out that our daughter had it. Tell the parent to read the explanation of Aspergers on Wikipedia, and see if they can detect any similarities.

What if your wife has Asperger's Syndrome?

If your wife has Asperger's there is nothing you need to worry about. Aspergers has no cure and is reletively mild on the autistic scale. Aspergers may include things such as OCD, depression, anxiety, besides the traits that mark Aspergers such as having certain almost obessive interests and generally not being very talkative. If you are however concerned such as the possibility of having a child, the odds of the child developing Aspergers is around 80% from what I've read. In most cases from what I've seen and experienced (I have Aspergers) people with Aspergers are fine and prefer to ignore the fact they have it and try to live a normal life. The best thing you can do is treat her to things she likes and not bring the issue up (not unless she has an interest with it :p).

If the first child has a mild form of Asperger's Syndrome will the second child have it too?

It is very likely the 2nd will have aspergers or be autistic to a more severe degree than aspergers on a personal note on the subject my brothers 1st has aspergers and his 2nd is 7months old and we've found out she is so far on the autism spectrum it is trets or rhetts but to be fair my brother has mild aspergers himself so you know, its all in genetics some say, others disagree. There is a genetic component to autism spectrum disorders. The chance of having a second child with autism or Asperger's Syndrome is greater than the usual chance of having a child with an autism spectrum disorder. However, it is more likely that the second child will not have an autism spectrum disorder than that the child will have one. If the next child does have it, it could be a milder or more severe case than that of the first child. According to one study, if one child in the family has autism, the chance that another will also have autism is 10%. In that study, the chance that an identical twin has autism when the other does is 82%. Other studies give results ranging from a 5% chance of a second child with autism to a 15% chance. However, if there are two children in the family who have autism, the chance of a third child with autism increases greatly to about 30%. (One study indicates that the chance of a third child with autism is 50% if the child is male.)

How do you tell a child about Asperger's Syndrome?

What and how you tell a child about Asperger's Syndrome will depend on the child's age and how much interaction he or she will have with a person who has Asperger's Syndrome. A child with a sibling or parent who has Asperger's Syndrome could see more characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome than one whose friend has it, and a child whose friend has it is likely to see more characteristics than one whose classmate has it. If it is a friend, discuss it with the parents of the friend to learn what characteristics the friend exhibits and what your child could do to help his or her friend. If it is a classmate, ask the school personnel what behaviors occur at school. Some characteristics to cover are: * misinterpreting meanings such as when taking words literally * sensory issues * adherence to routines such as wearing the same clothes or sitting in the same spot Some of the more comprehensive websites on autism and Asperger's Syndrome have information on describing Asperger's Syndrome to children. Also, the book "Can I Tell You about Asperger Syndrome? A Guide for Friends and Family?" by Jude Welton is written for children. It might be available from your local library.
