The playable version of obelisk is really good, as it is almost invincible. In a serious tournament, players won't be able to destroy it with bottomless, torrential tribute, gyzarus, DAD.... Not only that but at the cost of 2 monsters (they can be tokens, like scapegoat or fluffy tokens) You wipe out your opponents field.
In a warrior snchro deck, it could work better than in other decks (but it would still work better in a monarch deck or in a deck that focuses on tributes) because they usually have 3 copies of ''the inmortal bushi'' which can be revived at your standby phase and then be sacrificed for oblisk. For the two tributes for Obelisk's effect, you can use marauding captain, which summons another guy, and that makes two.
Conclusion: It's a good card as long as it is placed in the right deck, in a warrior synchro (you can use some x-sabers for that, I recomend you) I would give it the same importance as any tuner.
106me ADDS: I was researching on this and I think it would most certainly work. Although I was taking too much time on this (because there are apparently 2 types of this card) and I was beaten to the answer.
It is an Effect Monster.
There is no "red obelisk the tormentor". There is a TCG-legal version of Obelisk the Tormentor, released in Shonen Jump (see http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Obelisk_the_Tormentor_%28Effect_Monster%29).
Yes.
A playable version of Obelisk the Tormentor has been available in Japan since March, and the English version will be out very soon, it will be the next card to appear in the magazine itself. The legal Japanese version of Ra is out, and his English version will be released in December's shonen jump magazine.
JUMP-EN037 from Shonen Jump Magazine is a totally game legal version of Obelisk the Tormentor and can be used in tournaments. Any other version cannot be used - this is actually stated on the card, in English on JMP-004, and Japanese on GB1-002.
Obelisk the Tormentor, and all the other Egyptian God cards, have no password since they are not considered real playing cards. Where the password would be on the card, reads "This card cannot be used in a Duel" instead. The new tournament-legal Effect Monster version of Obelisk the Tormentor also lacks a password.
Most of them say "This card cannot be used in a duel" (either in English, or Japanese, on the GBI versions). However there is now a game legal print of Obelisk, it is JUMP-EN037, and is a regular Effect Monster version of Obelisk the Tormentor.
Both the original print and the legal Effect Monster version of Obelisk the Tormentor was released as a promotional card in a Shonen Jump Magazine.
it 's simple 5,6 one tribute 7+ two tributes. As well, because the only two cards that are twelve star that do not go into your extra deck are Yubel: The Ultimate Nightmare and Obelisk the Tormentor (Legal Version), only Obelisk requires three tributes.
Yes - Shonen Jump last year released a tournament legal, Effect monster version of Obelisk the Tormentor. Winged Dragon of Ra has likewise been released recently. Slifer however has not been announced yet.
Japan gets theirs earlier than we do in the west. The legal version of Ra has already been released in Japan, so the English print should follow. Since they've done Obelisk and Ra, there's no real reason to think they won't do Slifer too.
Yes, there is a playable version of the Winged Dragon of Ra available in the game.
