If the people had been planting a variety of potato strains, no one pest could have affected them all, the crop failure would have been much less severe, and full-scale famine would have been avoided. The English government was late in providing relief, and its measures were inadequate; that is why, to this day, many people still blame the British government for its role. However, the famine itself was simply the consequence of a general ignorance about sound agricultural practices.
