I think you misheard somebody referring to a MAF sensor. This stands for Mass Air-Flow sensor.
The answer is yes it could, conceivably, but from what I've heard it usually will just make the car go into "limp home" mode. As the car's ECU does not know how much air is getting into the engine, it does not know how much fuel to provide. Thus it has three options if the sensor is broken:
1 Guess. (not a good way to design it as the engine may run too rich and cause pollution)
2 Give up. (i.e. shut the engine off)
3 Play it safe. (Provide just enough fuel to get the car going. Most modern cars are designed this way: a light will come up on the dashboard and the car will go into "limp home" mode)

It actually could be some type of sensor such as the o2 sensor. Having a fried sensor can actually send mixed signals to your ecu which will make the car die or shut off.

Driving is already insanely safe. To make driving safer, we could ban radios while driving. Text messages and phones could also be banned. A maximum speed limit of 25 mph could be enforced. Helmets could also be required, as well as a 5 hour per day maximum driving allotment. All this could increase our safety by a very small amount.
check you water (coolant) level, make sure thermostat is working, radiator leaks, sensor problem
I think driving test differs from one state to another so, some may be difficult while other could be easy. Just make sure you relax while taking your driving test -- that will help you pass it.
Not knowing the year, make or model, I can only make a few suggestions, it could be a bad fuel pump, ran out of gasoline, broken timing belt, bad crank sensor or a dead battery because of alternator failure.
