It depends why it doesn't work. If it is just flat, then usually you can. If the battery has been damaged then maybe not.

Does the engine crank but not start? Or does it not even crank? Based on the information you gave, you could have a bad starter or weak battery. Dead battery. Recharge it or get a new one.

The LX178 has a stator to recharge the battery. When this goes bad, the voltage regulator indicates no charge being produced. The mower dies do to lack of enough charge to produce a spark.
