At this point in history, the only way to effectively take over the world is by conquest and many people have come close; Genghis Khan and Adolf Hitler are the most commonly cited such conquerors. These people are almost always, correspondingly, people who have some military background and horrific monsters in ethical terms. If you lack both of these attributes, as I do, it is practically impossible to take over the world.
