Several countries have experienced shifts from democracy to non-democratic governance in recent years. For example, Turkey has seen increasing authoritarianism under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, especially following the 2016 coup attempt. Other examples include Hungary, where Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has consolidated power and undermined democratic institutions.
The main difference is that a democratic government is power of the people. The people vote and whatever the government does, people have a freedom of speech to say what they think and a government is often changed around to suit the public. Monarchy is power through inheritance. People can't vote for the leader nor really object and live. It depends if you live in a time with a thoughtful king and not a king which does what he feels like it.
