The main difference is that a democratic government is power of the people. The people vote and whatever the government does, people have a freedom of speech to say what they think and a government is often changed around to suit the public.

Monarchy is power through inheritance. People can't vote for the leader nor really object and live. It depends if you live in a time with a thoughtful king and not a king which does what he feels like it.
