As of the summer of 2014 there is no single "family" or "Boss" in the traditional Irish Mafia strongholds of South Boston and Hell's Kitchen. There are plenty of Irish criminals in these areas, but nothing organized enough to be considered an organized crime "family." The place that actually has an Irish organized crime "family" is a bit surprising, at least to me; Pittsburgh, PA.
Pittsburgh once had a strong Italian crime family branch which had many Irish Associates. The Italian Pittsburgh Mafia was pretty much destroyed in the 90's and finished off in the beginning years of the millennium.
Control of the city began to change hands from the Italians to the Irish Associates in the late 90's and has now the city has totally been taken over by the Irish with the remnants of the Italian mafia now working for them.
The leadership of the "family" is based out of AOH Division 23 an Irish club in a neighborhood on the east side called Lawrenceville. They are involved in gambling, drugs, prostitution, stolen goods, bank robberies, and many other criminal activities. They also have many legitimate businessmen and have a semi-legal "slum lord" racket.
This family strength lies mostly in the fact that they have almost a total control over the Pittsburgh Police Department. Former mayor Luke Ravenstahl tried to change that by passing over a close friend of the Boss of the family for the Chief of Police job. The Family then retaliated and were able to have the new chief convicted of federal crimes.

They also made sure that Ravenstahl did not run again and now have a mayor easy to control and on their payroll.
