DID anybody else experienced major issues with losing reverse 2nd and fourth gears on a 2002 GMC Sonoma with 47000 miles auto tranny and v-6 motor?

This is a very common problem with the GM 4L60-E and 4L80-E automatic transmissions. It is the result of a weak reaction sun gear shell. Unfortunately this is one of the few GM transmission problems that require a rebuild or replacement of the transmission. GM has released an updated sun shell that is much stronger than the original. There is also another replacement sun shell called "The Beast", that many people opt for. It is also a good idea to have the updated GM valve body installed. You can expect to pay anywhere from $1,700 - $2,200 to have this repaired at the dealer. Sometimes you can find small transmission shops that will do it for as low as $1,000, but you can't be sure that quality parts will be used.
